What is DHT (Dihydrotestosterone)?

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is derived from testosterone, an androgen hormone that’s present in both men and women and that contributes to male and female sexual function. The body naturally converts about 10% of testosterone to DHT on a daily basis. Males have higher levels of both testosterone and DHT than females. Traditional hair regrowth theory holds that increased levels of DHT as we age that are the main cause of hair loss.

How is DHT used to treat hair loss and hair regrowth?

DHT itself is not used as a treatment to regrow hair; instead, treatments targeting DHT levels or its effects on hair follicles are used to address hair loss associated with androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness). These treatments include medications like finasteride and minoxidil.

What are Minoxidil and Finasteride?

These are the most common hair regrowth treatments currently available.

·      Finasteride: Finasteride is an oral medication that works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into DHT. By reducing DHT levels in the scalp, finasteride can slow down hair loss and, in some cases, promote hair regrowth. Clinical studies have shown that finasteride can be effective in halting or even reversing hair loss in a significant percentage of individuals, with approximately 80% of men experiencing ‘some’ improvement after using the medication for at least one year.

·      Minoxidil: Minoxidil is a topical solution or foam applied directly to the scalp, and its exact mechanism of action in promoting hair growth is not fully understood. However, it is believed to improve blood flow to the hair follicles, stimulate hair follicles in the telogen (resting) phase to enter the anagen (growth) phase, and prolong the duration of the anagen phase. Clinical studies have shown that minoxidil can lead to visible regrowth in a significant proportion of individuals, with approximately 40-60% of users experiencing moderate to dense regrowth after several months of consistent use.

It's important to note that the effectiveness of these treatments can vary from person to person, and individual responses may differ. Additionally, these medications may not work for everyone, and results are not permanent permanent; ongoing use is necessary to maintain any regrowth achieved.

Minoxidil (or DHT reduction) treatment is currently the most common treatment available for hair regrowth. However, the limited effectiveness of this treatment brings into question whether DHT levels are the “main” cause of hair loss.
